Daily Dose – June 27, 2011 [Audio]

by Sarah Craddock on June 27, 2011

Hello everyone! I’m Sarah, and this is the June 27th edition of the Daily Dose.

Translating Success

An Inside Higher Ed article talks about a foreign language program at Bergen Community College in New Jersey. While many four year institutions are trimming back or cutting their foreign language departments entirely, Bergen is expanding its programs. The school does not require students to take a foreign language to earn an associates degree, but the program is thriving due to student demand. Nearly 10% of the students taking classes for academic credit at Bergen were enrolled in the foreign language program this past academic year.

Cars Not Welcome Here

Most institutions of higher education face challenges related to parking, and many are jumping on the sustainability bandwagon. We’ve seen colleges encouraging alternative transportation – including carpooling, short-term rentals, and bicycles. A small number of colleges is taking it a step further by encouraging an entirely car-free college experience. Many institutions have noticed students driving across small campuses for class, and are trying to work to educate students about the environmental impact of such short trips.

Yes, College is Worth It

In a post on Confessions of a Community College Dean, Dean Dad discusses the recent trend of “College isn’t worth it.” Dean Dad points out that it doesn’t make sense to join the job market with just a high school diploma. Some can make that work, but chances are slim. He states the real issue is student loan burdens, and points out that the behavior of the elite shows that college is still a very important piece of the puzzle.

Thanks everyone. I’m Sarah, and this is the Daily Dose for BreakDrink dot com.
