You may know someone that works on a college campus (I am sure it is not you) that uses the word Millennial as a derogatory term. Or they may say “those millennials” which is then accompanied with an eye role. I have thought a lot about why this is. I have no scientific or factual answer but what I have determined is this: People do not like generations other than their own. I am sure the Boomers looked at my generation and said “those Gen X’ers” followed by an eye roll. On the surface, younger generations are different, and different is bad. But I have actually come to like the Millennial generation; mainly because they are closer to their family than ever before, volunteer at higher levels, and have a premium on education.
Pew Research Center has recently published their findings on the Millennial generation that is accompanied with a How Millennial Are You quiz. My Millennial score is 58. Take the quiz and leave your score in the comments.
I think this is information all Student Affairs professionals should read. When you take the time to learn about “the others” you may learn how to teach or supervise more effectively. Which brings me to my last point. Most new professionals you have hired in the last 3-4 years are probably considered Millennials. You need to stop referring to Millennials as them, and realize they are part of us.
