Well it is that time again. Student Affairs graduate students all around the country are trying to balance their thesis with polishing their resume. So how are you preparing? It is imperative the institution prepares for hiring just like a candidate would prepare for an interview.
I wanted to give you 5 tips to making a successful hire.
1. Outline the role of the committee – There are often times confusion on the role of the committee; are they there to share the work load, give input, or make the final hiring decision? The first meeting together should outline the role of the committee.
2. Have one point of contact – Make sure there is only one point of contact to the candidates, and they feel comfortable contacting you with questions.
3. Score sheets - If you are going to have the candidate meet with different groups on campus collect their information with a score sheet. I recommend using a different color for every on campus candidate so it will be easy to sort and keep with the proper candidate.
4. Candidate escort – Have a member of you staff stay with the candidate the entire day, taking them form location to location, and making sure the candidate is taken care of. They can also deliver the score sheets from location to location. They do not have to be part of the committee, just a good host.
5. You are also being interviewed – Remember the candidate is also interviewing you. How your staff conducts themselves, and how the interview process is conducted will let the candidate know if they want to be a part of your institution.
Give the candidate every chance to be comfortable and representative of their “real self” and take the time to showcase the real you/college/department/etc, too. An at-ease interview environment will allow everyone to get a more accurate feel and make a more informed decision for the best fit for everyone involved.
